of British members on its Committee and thus to alter the nature of a purely Chinese organization would be deeply resented. Indeed if Europeans were appointed the result would be, in the opinion of those best in a position to judge, that the Committee would resign in a body and the whole work of this valuable institution be brought to a
standstill.

I enclose a copy of a minute by the Secretary for Chinese Affairs in which he draws attention to the
indignation aroused in the local Chinese community at the insults which are constantly being repeated in England by persons most of whom are without knowledge or understanding of the social customs on which they comment.
